Narasimha Jayanti celebrates the appearance day of Lord Narasimha dev, who was the fourth of incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The form of Lord Narasimha dev is described in the ancient Hindu texts as half-man/half-lion, with his torso and lower body like that of a man while he had the face and claws of a lion. He took this form to save his great devotee Prahlada whose father, the demon Hiranyakasipu, repeatedly tried to kill him.
Hiranyakasipu had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that he could not be killed by man nor beast, during the day or night, inside or outside, and by no weapon. With this, Hiranyakasipu conquered heaven and earth and declared himself to be God, ordering all to worship him and not Lord Vishnu. While his entire kingdom worshiped Hiranyakasipu, there was nothing he could do to stop his own son from worshiping Lord Vishnu with strong devotion.
The demon even tried to kill his son in many imaginative ways, but Prahlada escaped time and again with the blessings of Lord Vishnu. One day, Hiranyakasipu challenged Prahlada by asking him, ‘If your God is omnipresent, is he in this pillar also?’ Prahlada answered, ‘He is present in the pillar and even in the rust’.
Hearing this, Hiranyakasipu smashed the pillar with his mace. Suddenly, Lord Vishnu emerged from the pillar in the form of Lord Narasimha (neither man nor beast) and slayed the demon at dusk (neither day nor night), at the entrance of a courtyard (neither inside nor outside), placing Hiranyakasipu on his lap (neither on the ground nor in the air), tearing out his heart with his bare hands (without any weapon), and overcoming all the boons.
Devotees fast until dust on this day.
